In this lesson, students learn about the June 7th celebration and how some people enjoy this holiday in Latin America
WHAT IS CORPUS CHRISTI DAY IN LATIN AMERICA?
During this holiday some Latin American countries commemorate Corpus Christi, which is mainly a catholic celebration. This date also marks the beginning of summer vacation or half of the year school break, depending on the country.
Students and their families take advantage of this time to rest, practice their favorite hobbies, share some quality time, and of course travel to touristy places. There are many different options people find when looking for an interesting place to visit, some of the most popular are places where extreme sports are practiced. Latin American countries have plenty of national parks, rivers, and mountains, which are ideal if you want to practice sports such as: sunboarding, surfing, bungee jumping, or rafting. Learn more about these sports in the infographic below.
Ask students to think about their own summer vacation and share the answers for the following questions:
  1. What are some activities that you and your family usually do during summer?
  2. Have you ever practiced an extreme sport? Which one? How was your experience?
  3. Is there any extreme sport you have heard of and would like to try? Which one? Why?
Go through this infographic about extreme sports that you can try in different places in Latin America, and answer the following questions:

EXTENSION ACTIVITY
Use this lottery template to review extreme sports in Spanish. This is a board game similar to Bingo. Ask students to write three extreme sports in Spanish in a piece of paper. Then, select a caller, who will be commentating sports in Spanish randomly. Players will be checking the words they wrote according to the ones mentioned by the caller. Whenever someone has crossed out the three options, they should yell “¡Loteria!” and will be declared the winner. Play different rounds and feel free to add up more sports to the list.
