In this lesson, students learn about June 7th celebration and how some people enjoy this holiday in Latin America
WHAT IS CORPUS CHRISTI DAY IN LATIN AMERICA?
Latin American countries commemorate Corpus Christi, a celebration with Catholic roots. This date also marks the beginning of summer vacation (or the half year school break) depending of the country.
Students and their families take advantage of this time to rest, practice their favourite hobbies, share some quality time, and of course, visit touristy places. There are many different options when looking for an interesting place to visit –and one of the most popular among nature lovers– are hiking roads.
Discuss the following questions as a group:
  1. Think about a place you’d like to visit and the kind of activities you can do there
  2. If you had the chance to take one year after school graduation to travel around the world, would you dare to include a hiking road on your itinerary? Would you like to travel on your own or would you prefer to do it with someone you know? If so, who? And why?
One of the most famous hiking roads in the world is the Inca Trail. This is a 4-day adventure that takes walkers through different spots from the Inca civilization, and has a worldwide known wonder: Machu Picchu. Take a look at this video about the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
Discuss these questions related to the video above:
  1. Would you dare to hike the Inca Trail?
  2. What do you think people can learn when going throughthe Inca Trail?
  3. What was your favourite landscape or spot from the video?
Experiential Activity
Look at this infographic , it contains information about 7 hiking roads in Latin America. In small groups, students will choose one the roads and work on a virtual collage or presentation that shows:
  • How would the students prepare to hike the road?
  • What would they need to bring (clothes, gear, etc.)?
  • Which important places will they visit/explore?
  • Allow some time for students to share their final product
Extension Activity
Just like the Inca Trail, you may find amazing hiking trails all over the world. Take some time to watch these videos about different trails from 3 different countries. Talk about how likely it is for students to visit one of these and what can be learned through the exploration of magnificent landscapes such as these.
