Suitable for: Grade 4, Grade 5, & Grade 6
In this lesson, students learn about June 14th celebration and how some people enjoy this holiday in Latin America.
WHAT IS SACRED HEART DAY?
Latin American countries commemorate Sacred Heart, a celebration with Catholic roots that encourages believers and non believers to remember the importance of peace and kindness to preserve human-kind.
EXPERIENTIAL ACTIVITY
Latin Americans in countries where this holiday is observed, take advantage of this time to engage in activities that highlight the meaning of peace and how kindness can be a powerful vehicle to achieve it. Mafalda is a very known comic created in 1962 by Argentinian cartoonist Quino, it addresses several of the concerns and realities from Latin America from the prespective of a 6-year-old girl. As a class, take a look at the comic strip in Resource Sheet 1; students can complete the tasks and share their answers with the group.
  1. Find the meaning of the unknown words in the comic.
  2. Students can make a list of the important things in their own life.
  3. Encourage the class to compare their answers from exercise 2 and reflect on similarities and differences.
  4. Discuss with students the following questions: What are some things in life that are important for everyone? Do you think that these important things in life change (due to age, location, culture, beliefs, etc.)? How so?
Macanudo (Argentina) and Charlie Brown (USA) are comics that often portrait the value of friendship. Show students some comic strips in Resource Sheet 2 and reflect on how friendship relies on kindness to exist. Have an open dialogue about values that can help us being good friends and how friendship can make our world brighter. In the last page of the resource sheet, you will find a template for every student to create their own comic about friendship.
EXTENSION ACITIVTY
In the videos below you may find 3 cases in which animals are the best examples for friendship. Take a look at the video titles and choose one of them to share with the class. Talk about students' experiences with animals/pets and how through their companionship and friendship animals help us see kindness in the world.
