In this lesson, students learn about June 14th celebration and how some people enjoy this holiday in Latin America.
During this holiday some Latin American countries commemorate the day of the Sacred Heart, which is mainly a Catholic celebration. However, this date also reminds the community that there is kindness in the world, and every single good action counts. Students and their families take advantage of this time to reflect on genuinely good actions to help or support others. At the same time, communities think about the relevance of those actions to strengthen relationships with relatives, friends, and neighbors.
-
Talk to your students about this special celebration and ask them to think about a time when someone showed kindness to them. Students will use the template on Resource Sheet 1 to make a drawing that represents that situation; then, they can share it with the rest of the class.
-
Read this fable about kindness and friendship to students (the fable is available in English and Spanish). Then, ask students to identify the good actions the characters performed in the story and what was the objective of each action.
Share
Resource Sheet 2; students can use the template in order to create finger puppets. Students can draw and decorate the characters from the fable on Activity 2. They can use colored pencils, glitter, markers, or paint.
Ask students to take a look at the silhouette of a person in
Resource Sheet 3. The word Amigo/Amiga (friend) is written in the middle. Share the meaning of the word in Spanish with the class, and ask students to fill the silhouette with the traits of a Good friend (Buen amigo/amiga).
